MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – March 30

Boston Red Sox vs. Texas Rangers

First Pitch – 2:45 pm EST
Globe Life Field – Arlington, TX
Broadcast – MLB TV

The top half of the first sees the Red Sox get their hacks. Unfortunately for them, it’ll be against a returning Jacob deGrom. If his Spring Training is to be believed, it might be a slightly more reserved version of the veteran, but he looked every bit what the Rangers were hoping for him to be. He may not have all that tall of a task in the first inning anyways. The Red Sox have yet to score a first inning run this year, and it hasn’t just been a first inning issue. They have scored just nine total runs over their three games. I expect that deGrom should be able to navigate the first here to get our NRFI started.

The bats in the bottom of the first are starting just about as slow as Boston. Over the first three games of this series, the Rangers have managed just ten runs. While two of them were in the first on Saturday, they’ll face an arm that I’m willing to back here. Rookie Richard Fitts gets the ball on Sunday afternoon and he impressed in Spring Training. He also looked good in limited action last year, allowing just four earned runs in 20.2 innings pitched. With the Rangers starting cold, we’ll trust him to get the job done.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for March 30: No (-135)

Athletics vs. Seattle Mariners

First Pitch – 4:10 pm EST
T-Mobile Park – Seattle, WA
Broadcast – MLB TV

Well, we’ve rode this game for NRFIs in each of the last two days. We might as well look to make it three straight.

The reason I like the NRFI for the top half of the inning here is simple – Bryan Woo. For as long as he was healthy last year, Woo looked every bit of a Cy Young candidate. In 121.1 innings he struck out 101 batters while posting a 2.89 ERA. He did all of that while only walking 13 batters all season. Although they’ve scored some runs early here, I don’t really rate this Athletics offense all that high, so we’ll expect them to get blanked here.

The bottom of the first is much more of a fade of the offense than it is a backing of the arm on the bump. That’s not to throw shade at JP Sears, who was fine last season. The 29-year old threw 180.2 innings and kept his ERA to 4.38. It’s nothing to inform the Hall of Fame committee of, it’s serviceable. It should play up against this Mariners offense, who is struggling to get going after a rough 2024. They’ve scored just six runs over the course of the first three games. With that kind of slump, we can take Sears to round out this NRFI for us.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for March 30: No (-140)
