MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – June 26

Miami Marlins vs. Kansas City Royals

First Pitch – 2:10 pm EST
Kauffman Stadium – Kansas City, Missouri
Broadcast – MLB TV

In the top half of the inning, I don’t expect much of a sweat. The Marlins offense has been quite bad so far this year. They rank 29th in the majors in runs per game – only ahead of the lowly White Sox (more from them later). Now they’ll try to score on Brady Singer, who is coming off of a pair of stellar outings. Facing the defending champion Rangers, who are admittedly down, and the red-hot Dodgers, Singer only allowed four combined earned runs. In those 11.0 innings, he also allowed just eight total hits. This Marlins offense should be a wide enough step down that he should set up this NRFI for us.

The bottom half of the inning is not nearly as comfortable. The Royals have a top 10 offense in the majors and Trevor Rogers sports a 4.90 ERA. However, he’s been much better as of late. In his last three starts, he’s alloowed just five earned runs in 18.1 innings. In that time, he’s also managed a 0.93 WHIP, which means he’s not even allowing baseruners. To add to that, the Royals did score in the first inning on Tuesday, but that was the first time in weeks. They had been 15 games since the last time they scored in the first – June 8th to be exact. I like Rogers to start a new streak here.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 26: No (-110)

Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Chicago White Sox

First Pitch – 8:10 pm EST
Guaranteed Rate Field – Chicago, Illinois
Broadcast – MLB TV

We’re taking a big leap of faith here in the top of the first in expecting the White Sox to limit the Dodgers. However, that’s just how much faith I have in Erick Fedde. He has three straight quality starts, allowing just five total runs in those three starts. Over those 20.0 innings, he’s walked just two batter and stuck out 13. Those numbers may not get him votes for the Cy Young, but they are impressive enough to shut anyone out – particularly when all we need is one inning. Additionally, the Dodgers had been three straight games without a first inning run up until Shohei Ohtani led off with a homer on Tuesday.

On the other side, we need much less convincing to get in on this NRFI. The White Sox seem like they could be shut out by a lot of minor league pitchers at the moment. They’re only scoring 3.04 runs per game, which is not just last in the league, but last by a wide margin. They trail 29th (the Miami Marlins) by 0.47 runs per game. Gavin Stone carries his eight-win record and a 3.05 ERA to meet these White Sox. I imagine he’ll breeze right through the first inning.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 26: No (-115)
