MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – April 29
Washington Nationals vs. Philadelphia Phillies
First Pitch – 6:45 pm EST
Citizens Bank Park – Philadelphia, PA
Broadcast – MLB TV
Washington gets first crack at breaking up the NRFI here, and their offense has been surprisingly solid this year. They rank right in the middle of the pack in terms of run scoring at 15th in MLB. However, that doesn’t account for needing to face Zack Wheeler. Wheeler has flashed his most dominant stuff of the season in his last two outings. He’s held those two opponents to just 4 earned runs over 13.0 innings, but the more impressive metric is the strikeouts. In those 13.0 innings, he’s racked up 22 strikeouts. He seems to be in Cy Young form, which means we should be able to rely on him for three quick outs in this one.
While he might not have the same name recognition, MacKenzie Gore has been just as hot lately. He also has allowed just four earned runs over his last two start – his in 12.0 innings. In those 12.0 innings, he’s racked up 21 strikeouts, which includes a 13 strikeout outing in Coors Field. The Phillies are just one spot ahead of the Nationals in terms of run scoring (currently ranked 14th), and the top of their order fans a good deal. As a result, I like Gore to take this one home for us.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 29: No (-130)
Boston Red Sox vs. Toronto Blue Jays
First Pitch – 7:07 pm EST
Rogers Centre – Toronto, ON
Broadcast – MLB TV
The Red Sox will take the field first in this one, which has got to give NRFI bettors some level of anxiety. They’ve been strong in the first inning and beyond at scoring runs. However, I’m still going to put my faith in righty Bowden Francis. He showed signs of brilliance last year in spots and has been pretty solid this year as well. Additionally, he’s started five games this year and hasn’t allowed a first inning run in any of them. I’ll bank on that trend continuing in this one.
The bottom of the inning shouldn’t be a sweat at all. Getting past those three outs for the Red Sox will be far more difficult than Garrett Crochet getting three against these Blue Jays. The Blue Jays rank 27th in first inning runs per game and aren’t much better over the complete game. They rank 26th in total runs on the year, scoring just 3.39 per game. They’ve been even worse lately as they’ve posted just seven runs over the last three games. I can’t imagine them getting to Crochet at all, never mind early in the game.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 29: No (-125)
