MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – April 28

Minnesota Twins vs. Cleveland Guardians

First Pitch – 6:10 pm EST
Progressive Field – Cleveland, OH
Broadcast – MLB TV

The top of the first will see Gavin Williams trying to get our NRFI out on the right foot as he faces the top of this Twins lineup. He’s been solid, allowing just two earned runs in four of his five starts this season. In his last outing, perhaps his best, he kept the Yankees in check to the tune of two runs over 6.1 innings. That kind of stuff should give you plenty of confidence as he steps in against the Twins. They rank 21st in the majors in terms of runs scored. They are a little betting in the first inning, but are still below league average in that metric.

I’m not anticipating much of a sweat in the bottom of the inning either. Bailey Ober has similarly been very good this year. He’s allowed no more than one earned run in three of his last four games. Overall, he’s allowed only six total on the year. Now he’ll get a set of bats that is quite a bit worse than what he had previously faced. The Guardians are near the Twins in terms of runs scored, where they rank 20th in MLB. They are also not great when it comes to scoring in the first, where they rank 18th in the league. That should give you enough faith in Ober finishing the job in the first.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 28: No (-120)

New York Yankees vs. Baltimore Orioles

First Pitch – 6:35 pm EST
Camden Yards – Baltimore, MD
Broadcast – MLB TV

It’s always a bit of a risk when you work the Yankees into an NRFI situation. However, I sort of like the work Tomoyuki Sugano has been doing for the Orioles. Over five starts, he’s yet to allow more than three earned runs in a game. While he isn’t a big strikeout guy (just nine all year), the big swings of the Yankees might just help him elevate those numbers. Additionally, he’s been good at enducing weak contact, which should make him an even better candidate to deal with the big boppers in this game.

The bottom of the inning is less of a sweat in this one. The Orioles are just 19th in MLB when it comes to soring runs this year. They are better in the first, but still not much to write home about. Now they’ll face Will Warren – another pitcher who has been surprisingly good. He’s allowed just two or less runs in three straight games. Even if you want to peel that back, he’s allowed two or less in four of the last five games. With the Orioles not being the biggest threat, I think he gets through the first three safely.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 28: No (-105)
