MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – April 26

Tampa Bay rays vs. San Diego Padres

First Pitch – 8:40 pm EST
Petco Park – San Diego, CA
Broadcast – MLB TV

Tampa Bay has been in the middle of the pack when it comes to scoring runs in the first. However, they haven’t cracked the opening frame in the last three games. That should be helpful for Dylan Cease in his quest to keep them quiet early. His 6.04 ERA might scare people off of an NRFI bet, but it was really just one rocky start. If you ignore his ugly outing against the surprisingly potent Athletics, he’d be sporting a 3.38 ERA instead. He’s allowed just two earned runs in each of his last two outings and has fanned six in each of them as well. I like those trends to keep Tampa Bay at bay.

The bottom of the inning should be even less of a sweat. While the Padres have been winning, they have been struggling at the plate lately. They have scored just two runs in the last three games. As a result, their runs per game has fallen to 3.96, which has them in the bottom third of the league. Ryan Pepiot will try to keep that trend going. He, similarly, has been solid with the exception of one outing. Outside of one outing against the Red Sox, he’s looked phenomenal. He has also struck out 31 batters in just 28.0 innings. That should help him get out of any jams early should they occur.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 26: No (-145)

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Los Angeles Dodgers

First Pitch – 9:10 pm EST
Dodgers Stadium – Los Angeles, CA
Broadcast – MLB TV

We went for the NRFI in this one yesterday, but whiffed on it. Yoshinobu Yamamoto gave up a first inning run for just his fourth earned run of the year. Despite that disappointing outcome, we’re back on this one for Saturday.

Roki Sasaki will be in charge of keeping the Pirates off the board here. He hasn’t allowed more than two earned runs in any start on the season. Additionally, the Pirates shouldn’t give him much trouble based on their past performances. Despite yesterday’s action, they rank 25th in runs scored and 27th in runs scored in the first inning.

The bottom of the first will be a bit more of a sweat. The Dodgers are obviously a much more talented team in terms of the bats. Mitch Keller will be the one tasked with that assignment for Saturday. He’s been in great shape in his last three starts. He’s held opponents to five runs over those last three starts, tallying 18.1 innings over that time. That comes out to a 2.49 ERA in that span. I think that seems sharp enough to keep the Dodgers quiet early.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 26: No (-115)
