MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – April 25

Houston Astros vs. Kansas City Royals

First Pitch – 7:40 pm EST
Kauffman Stadium – Kansas City, MO
Broadcast – MLB TV

In the first of our two NRFI offerings, we get Seth Lugo on the bump to start. He’s been pretty solid on the year with a 3.90 ERA. The main problem for him is that he’s been allowing quite a few home runs as of late. In his last two outings, he allowed seven earned runs with all of them coming by way of home run (four solo homers and a three run blast). Luckily for him here, he’s facing a team that doesn’t hit a lot of dingers. With 0.79 home runs per game, the Astros rank 23rd in the majors. If Lugo can keep them in the park early, he should handle this NRFI for us.

Everything we said about the top of the first can be applied to the bottom of the first as well. Hayden Wesneski has been good enough for Houston – sporting a 3.91 ERA. He’s given up five runs over his last two outings and four of them have come on solo home runs. He’ll have even less of a problem with the long ball here, as the Royals are the worst team in the league in terms of hitting dingers. They average just 0.46 home runs per game and are even worse at home. That should help Wesneski limit the damage and cash this NRFI.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 25: No (-115)

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Los Angeles Dodgers

First Pitch – 10:05 pm EST
Dodgers Stadium – Los Angeles, CA
Broadcast – MLB TV

This game is far less about power-lacking offenses and much more about power pitchers. The Dodgers send out Yoshinobu Yamamoto to the mound. He’s sporting a 0.93 ERA on the year and has been absolutely sensational. He hasn’t allowed an earned run in the month of April (three starts). Things should get even easier for him as the Pirates haven’t exactly been hot at the top of their order. They rank 27th in first inning runs with just 0.27 per game. I expect runs to be at a premium for the Pirates all game, never mind in the first inning.

The bottom of the inning sees Paul Skenes toe the rubber. While the Dodgers is a much more daunting offense to look to retire in the first, I still like the run Skenes has been on. After getting touched up a bit by St. Louis, Skenes has allowed just three earned runs over 13.0 innings. In that span, he’s tallied a 10-1 strikeout to walk ratio. We have to worry about the big boppers in this lineup, but I think Skenes can get us three outs without too much sweat.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 25: No (-145)
