MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – April 23

Toronto Blue Jays vs. Houston Astros

First Pitch – 7:40 pm EST
Daikin Park – Houston, TX
Broadcast – MLB TV

The first of our two NRFI picks for today comes to us from Houston. In the top of the first, we see yet another surprise quality starter magically appear in Houston. Ryan Gusto carries a 3.18 ERA into Wednesday’s action. He has 17 strikeouts in 17.0 innings and has picked up those strikeout numbers since moving into a starting role. Today should help all of those numbers as he faces a Blue Jays team that ranks 23rd in first inning runs and have struck out 8.33 times per game over their last three.

The Astros get second crack at scoring and they are actually one of the few teams that are behind the Blue Jays in terms of scoring in the first inning. Their 0.26 first inning runs per game have them 27th in MLB in that stat category. They’ll get Bowden Francis, who has been stellar this year. He’s not allowed more than three runs in a game this season and only allowed more than two once. He also hasn’t allowed a first inning run all year either.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 23: No (-115)

Tampa Bay rays vs. Arizona Diamondbacks

First Pitch – 9:40 pm EST
Chase Field – Phoenix, AZ
Broadcast – MLB TV

The top of the first sees Eduardo Rodriguez toe the rubber again. He’s been solid this year, especially when it comes to his last two outings. He’s racked up 11.2 innings in those last two outings and has only allowed three earned runs while striking out 12 batters. The Rays haven’t scored a first inning run in any of their last three games. Additionally, they rank in the bottom third of the league in terms of total runs scored.

Taj Bradley will be looking to blank a Diamondbacks team that has been scoring a lot of runs as of late. However, they haven’t been great early in the game. They rank 20th in first inning runs per game with just 0.43. Also, while Taj Bradley’s numbers don’t look great on the season, they’re largely inflated by his bad outing against the hard-hitting Yankees. Outside of that game, he’s posted a 3.71 ERA. At the very least, he should be able to keep Arizona quiet for the last three outs of the inning.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 23: No (-120)
