MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – April 22

Seattle Mariners vs. Boston Red Sox

First Pitch – 6:45 pm EST
Fenway Park – Boston, MA
Broadcast – MLB TV

In the top of the first, we get the Red Sox return for Bryan Bello. He was on fire for the Red Sox down the stretch last year, allowing two or fewer runs in each of his last four starts. While I don’t expect him to be that sharp here, he shouldn’t have to be the way these Mariners are swinging the bats. Despite putting up a three run first in their last game, they are still below leageu average when it comes to scoring in the first inning. Their offense has ticked up to 13th in terms of run scoring in MLB, but I still like Bello to get us those first three outs.

Bryce Miller gets the ball against the Red Sox in the bottom of the inning. He had a bit of a rocky start to the year, giving up seven runs in his first two outings. Since then, he’s been sensational for the Mariners. He’s allowed just one run since that time and racked up 13 strikeouts over the next 10.0 innings that he threw. Boston is a heavy strikeout team – fanning 9.38 times per game. That puts them in 28th of the 30 teams. Should Miller run into any problems, that should help bail him out.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 22: No (-120)

Colorado Rockies vs. Kansas City Royals

First Pitch – 7:40 pm EST
Kauffman Stadium – Kansas City, MO
Broadcast – MLB TV

Speaking of teams that strike out a lot, the Rockies lead the league in that category. They’ll get first crack at ruining our NRFI in this one against the breakout star of the Royals, Kris Bubic. He holds a 1.88 ERA going into Tuesday’s action. His 27 strikeouts in just 24.0 innings also inspires plenty of confidence in being able to keep Colorado quiet. Add in that Colorado is 27th in scoring in the first inning, and there is even more reason to love this NRFI spot.

The bottom of the inning might be a touch more of a sweat. However, Ryan Feltner has been pretty sharp for the Rockies. He did get roughed up a bit by the Dodgers last time out, but prior to that, he had held all three of his opponents to two or less earned runs. It’s worth noting that he held the Dodgers scoreless in the first inning as well. Kansas City is a far cry from the Dodgers at this point in the season. They rank last in runs per game with just 2.91. Feltner should be able to keep them in check and close out our NRFI.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 22: No (-140)
