MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – April 21
Cincinnati Reds vs. Miami Marlins
First Pitch – 6:40 pm EST
loanDepot Park – Maimi, FL
Broadcast – MLB TV
We’ll lead off with an NRFI on Monday in Florida with the Reds visiting the Marlins. Max Meyer will toe the rubber against the Reds in the top of the first and he’s looked sensational on the year. In four starts on the year, he holds a 2.63 ERA with 27 strikeouts in just 24.0 innings. Those are solid numbers to shut down just about anybody. The Reds are not a team that we particularly have to fear early in the game either. They’re right in the middle of the pack in terms of first inning runs – ranking 15th in MLB.
Nick Lodolo is another pitcher putting up some solid numbers early in the year. While he’s not sporting nearly the strikeout numbers we see from Meyer, his run prevention is even better. He’s held a 2.31 ERA over his four starts this year, which includes a stretch of back-to-back scoreless starts against the Brewers and Giants. Miami has also been poor at scoring in the first inning. Their 0.38 first inning runs per game ranks 24th in MLB. They also haven’t scored in the first inning in any of their last three games.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 21: No (-140)
St. Louis Cardinals vs. Atlanta Braves
First Pitch – 7:15 pm EST
Truist Park – Atlanta, GA
Broadcast – MLB TV
For one of the first times this year, I like an YRFI on Monday. The Braves are finally finding their bats. After a slow start to the season, they put up 16 runs in three games in a sweep of the Twins. Not only are they starting to find their bats, but they also face a pitcher they’ve had tons of success off of. Erick Fedde is on the bump Monday and he’s been ripped by the top of this lineup. Each of their top three batters have a slugging percentage of at least .800 in their head-to-head matchup. Both Matt Olson and Marcel Ozuna have taken him deep before, and I just can’t imagine him getting through three outs without some problems.
The YRFI bet is far more about the top of the inning that it is the bottom. Spencer Schwellenbach has been solid this year, but is coming off of his worst outing of the year. He was charged with six earned runs against the Blue Jays in his last start. I’m not sure the Cardinals have what it takes to get to him in that same way, but if the Braves score, it doesn’t matter what they do.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 21: Yes (-110)
