MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – April 19
Seattle Mariners vs. Toronto Blue Jays
First Pitch – 3:07 pm EST
Rogers Centre – Toronto, ON
Broadcast – MLB TV
This series let us down on Friday when the Blue Jays got to Bryan Woo early in the game. However, with an even better pitching matchup on Saturday, we’re doubling down on this one.
The Blue Jays send Jose Barrios to the bump. He got hit around a bit by the Orioles last game, but that’s ahrdly something I’m going to hold against him. In the prior two games – against Boston and Washington – he went 12.2 innings and allowed just three runs. Seattle’s just ahead of Washington in terms of offensive production on the year, and well behind the Red Sox. As a result, I think this is an offense Barrios can tame.
Logan Gilbert will be the arm looking to close out our NRFI. He carries a 2.38 ERA into the weekend and has allowed more than one earned run in a game in just one of the four starts he’s had this year. He gets a great matchup to keep that ball rolling in this one. The Pirates rank 25th in runs per game with just 3.52. They are also near the bottom of the barrell in regards to scoring in the first inning. They rank 24th in that category with just 0.35 per game.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 19: No (-130)
Cleveland Guardians vs. Pittsburgh Pirates
First Pitch – 4:05 pm EST
PNC Park – Pittsburgh, PA
Broadcast – MLB TV
It’s Paul Skenes day, which usually means that I like the NRFI in Pittsburgh. Today is no different. After a hot start, the Guardians’ bats have slowed quite a bit. They’ve dropped to 17th in the league in runs per game (4.11) and 19th in the league in first inning runs per game (0.42). Skenes has allowed more than two runs just once all year and is sporting a sub-3.00 ERA. He should be able to get us those first three outs without breaking too much of a sweat.
In the bottom of the inning, we’re going to see a much less impressive pitching situtation. However, I like the chances here for Ben Lively. The first time through the order has not been a problem for Lively. In fact, he hasn’t allowed a run in the first or second inning all year. I doubt Pittsburgh and their 0.24 first inning runs per game is going to be the team to change that. They rank 27th in that metric across MLB.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 19: No (-125)
