MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – April 17

San Francisco Giants vs. Philadelphia Phillies

First Pitch – 4:05 pm EST
Citizens Bank Park – Philadelphia, PA
Broadcast – MLB TV

In the afternoon action in Philadelphia, Christopher Sanchez gets the nod to start for the home squad. He’s looked good on the short season – putting together a 3.12 ERA over a three-start sample. In 17.1 innings, he’s struck out 19 batters and has kept teams off the scoreboard for the most part. He’s allowed a run or less in two of his three starts. Although the Giants bats have been hot, those numbers give me the confidence that he can get our NRFI started on the right foot.

To close out this NRFI, we’ll need to see Jordan Hicks return to form. He got stung by the torpedo bats in New York his last time out, but prior to that, he had been sharp. He’s also a big strikeout guy, which should help him here against the Phillies. They are a team that has quite a bit of swing and miss high up in their order. In addition, they have not been the run scoring machine they had been in year’s past. Currently, they rank 17th in runs scored with just 4.11 per game.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 17: No (-135)

Cleveland Guardians vs. Baltimore Orioles

First Pitch – 6:35 pm EST
Camden Yards – Baltimore, MD
Broadcast – MLB TV

In the night game of our two game breakdown, I like the NRFI yet again. The Orioles will look to start it for us with Tomoyuki Sugano on the hiull. He’s has a modest 3.86 ERA through the year and largely pitches to contact. Also, that should play up against this Cleveland team that doesn’t strikeout much. He won’t rely on hit and miss and as a result should have an easier time. In addition, Cleveland’s bats have been flat as of late dropping them down to 22nd in terms of runs scored on the season.

Tanner Bibee is the name we’ll need to close the second one out in the bottom half of the inning. Maybe his 4.40 ERA doesn’t instill confidence. However, that because he got shelled by the Angels in a game two weeks ago, and has otherwise been lights out. He’s thrown 10.1 innings in the other two game and not allowed a single run. While Baltimore has some hot bats, I do trust Bibee to get us out of that.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 17: No (-115)
