MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – April 14
Atlanta Braves vs. Toronto Blue Jays
First Pitch – 7:07 pm EST
Rodgers Centre – Toronto, ON
Broadcast – MLB TV
In our first NRFI selection of the day, I like the Braves and their lackluster offense to get off on the wrong foot. Yes, they’ve been a touch better as of late – climbing all the way up to 23rd in first inning runs and 26th in runs per game (3.27 per game). However, that still has them in the bottom third of the league and with a very tough matchup here. While not a household name yet, Easton Lucas has been lights out this year. He’s thrown 10.1 innings and has yet to allow a single earned run on the year.
The bottom of the inning looks like a good opportunity for the scoreboard to stay clean as well. Grant Holmes gets the nod again for Atlanta. He looked solid last time out. He kept the Phillies at bay for 4.0 innings and struck out six batters in the process. The Jays are going to be quite a bit worse than the Phillies when it comes to the bats. Although they are a bit better than the Braves right now, they’re only averaging 3.94 runs per game – good enough for 20th in MLB at the moment.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 14: No (-105)
Houston Astros vs. St. Louis Cardinals
First Pitch – 7:45 pm EST
Busch Stadium – St. Louis, MO
Broadcast – MLB TV
We head to the midwest for our last NRFI play of Monday. The Cardinals will try to keep the Astros scoreless in the first using Sonny Gray on the bump. He looked good his last time out, with just one earned run over 5.0 innings against the Pirates. It’ll help that the Astros bats have stumbled out of the gate. They are currently 29th in the majors in first inning runs with just 0.13 per game. They are a touch better with overall runs at 4.00 per game (19th in MLB), but still nothing that has me worried for Gray’s outing.
In the bottom of the first, we get another team that has struggled in the first inning so far. The Cardinals are averaging just 0.27 runs per game in the first, putting them in 25th place overall. Matters will get worse for them with Framber Valdez staring them down. He’s maintained a 2.50 ERA on the year. Over the 18.0 innings that he’s thrown, he’s struck out 21 batters. That type of dominance should help us bring home our second NRFI of the day.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 14: No (-145)
