MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – April 12
Boston Red Sox vs. Chicago White Sox
First Pitch – 4:10 pm EST
Rate Field – Chicago, IL
Broadcast – MLB TV
Here’s a sentence you maybe we’re expecting to see this year: I really trust the arm of White Sox’s pitcher Martin Perez. That 2022 season seemed like an odd blip on the radar for the 34-year old, but he seems to have recaptured some of the magic this year. He’s thrown 12.1 innings on this short season while striking out 13 and allowing just one run. With Boston being just a middle of the pack team when it comes to putting up runs in the first, I’ll take my chances with those numbers to start my NRFI.
In the bottom of the inning, this lackluster White Sox offense will come to the dish. They came out of the gates hard, but now seem to be right where we expected them to be. They rank 24th in the majors in runs scored and are unlikely to be on an unward trajectory. They’ll face Richard Fitts in this one, who hasn’t been a world beater, but he has been a solid starter. On the year he hasn’t allowed a first inning run and has largely kept his squad out of trouble early on. Things should be even easier for him against this Chicago lineup.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 12: No (-140)
Texas Rangers vs. Seattle Mariners
First Pitch – 9:40 pm EST
T-Mobile Park – Seattle, WA
Broadcast – MLB TV
We unsucessfully tried this NRFI last night, with the Mariners finding a firs- inning run off of Jacob deGrom. However, that was just their third first-inning run all year. As a result, we’re doubling down here. Sure, Kumar Rocker’s season numbers look a bit ugly with the small sample size, but that’s just due to his first start. He settled in nicely in his second start against the Rays – going 5.0 innings and only allowing one run. He also didn’t walk anyone, which was a bit of an issue in crunch time during his first outing.
Texas also hitting the ball super well this year. They rank 27th in MLB in runs per game and have scored in the first inning in just one of their last five games. They’ll face Bryan Woo, who has been sensational for the last couple years – as long as he’s healthy. In both of his outings this year, he kept his opponents scoreless through the first three innings. We only need him to get us three outs here and I’ll trust that he can make that happen.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 12: No (-135)
