MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – April 9
New York Yankees vs. Detroit Tigers
First Pitch – 1:10 pm EST
Comerica Park – Detroit, MI
Broadcast – Prime Video
In the top of the first of the afternoon action in Detroit, we’ll be relying on the pitching to thrive rather than the bats to falter. They haven’t been faltering all that often for the Yankees. They lead the league in runs per game and are second in the league when it comes to scoring in the first inning. However, I’m still choosing to put my faith in Jack Flaherty. He’s looked good so far this season – going 11.1 innings and striking out 12 while maintaining a 2.38 ERA. Plus, he’s faced the Yankees just once before in his career and looked sensational doing so. He held them scoreless over 6.0 innings.
To close on the NRFI, we’re going to have to again put our faith in the pitchers. The Tigers are the only team better than the Yankees this year at scoring in the first inning. They are a touch worse over the game, but still a respectable 7th place. However, they’ll get the Yankees newest front of the rotation addition in Max Fried on Wednesday. Fried has allowed just three runs in 10.1 innings on the year with 10 strikeouts to his name as well. I think with the solid matchup, we can rely on the first six outs.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 9: No (TBD)
Los Angeles Angels vs. Tampa Bay Rays
First Pitch – 7:05 pm EST
George M. Steinbrenner Field – Tampa, FL
Broadcast – MLB TV
We won’t have to rely on the defense quite so much in this one as there are a couple of so-so offenses in the mix. The Angels bats have been a bit better than I think most anticipated in this short season. However, they still remain just a nudge above league average in scoring and in scoring in the first inning. As a result, I don’t mind leaning on Ryan Pepiot, who has been solid this year. He’s allowed just three runs over 11.0 innings this year – and he’s managed to fan as many batters as he’s pitched innings. As a result, I like his chances of getting through the top of this Angels lineup.
In the bottom of the inning, we’ll finally get out first below average hitting team. The Rays rank 18th in MLB in runs scored and have been even slower with the bats in the last half week. They’ll get Yusei Kikuchi, who apart from letting up some dingers, has been pretty successful on the year. Luckily for him, the Rays rank 29th in the majors in home runs per game. He should be able to keep them in the park and with a zero in the first inning.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 9: No (TBD)
