MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – April 8

Philadelphia Phillies vs. Atlanta braves

First Pitch – 7:15 pm EST
Truist Park – Atlanta, GA
Broadcast – TBS

While he maybe didn’t look perfect in his starts against the Padres and the Dodgers, Chris Sale is still the reigning Cy Young winner for a reason. He’s still got all of his best stuff and stuck out 12 batters in the 10.0 innings he’s thrown. On top of that, there is also the fact that Philadelphia has been pretty brutal when it comes to scoring in the first inning. They are averaging 0.22 runs per game in the first inning. That number puts them in 27th place in MLB. So even though they have been scoring plenty of runs in this short season, I still like this NRFI to get started right here.

While the Phillies have been scoring a lot of runs on the short season, the Braves have not. They’re dead last in runs per game on the season – scoring just 2.67 per game. That includes a game where they hung 10 runs on the Marlins. If you remove that game from the mix, their offense has been truly pathetic. Not only have they looked ugly, but they too have a brutal pitching matchup. The Phillies send Zack Wheeler to the bump, who was the only player other than Sale to get a first place vote for the NL Cy Young last year.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 8: No (-145)

Minnesota Twins vs. Kansas City Royals

First Pitch – 7:40 pm EST
Kauffman Stadium – Kansas City, MO
Broadcast – MLB TV

The top of the first in Kansas City will see Cole Ragans toeing the rubber. Ragans had a bit of a tough time getting going in game one on the season, but bounced back well in his last go. He threw 5.0 innings against the Brewers in that game and struck out 10 of the 15 outs that he recorded. While the Twins have been scoring early in the game at a solid clip, they have been a below average offense on the year. They rank 17th in MLB in terms of runs per game. They’ve scored just 3.89 per game on the young season, and I think Ragans can help reduce that number.

In the bottom of the inning, we’ll get a chance to see Pablo Lopez back in action. He’s been solid so far on the early season – keeping his ERA down to 2.25. The only earned runs he’s given up this season have been on home runs. That bodes well in a contest with Kansas City as they rank 29th in MLB in home runs per game. They’re hitting just 0.56 per game and have been even slower as of late. They have just one in the last three games going into Monday’s action. Lopez should keep them in the park and get us the first three outs here.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 8: No (-135)
