MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – April 7

Houston Astros vs. Seattle Mariners

First Pitch – 9:40 pm EST
T-Mobile Park – Seattle, WA
Broadcast – MLB TV

I’m liking the NRFI for T-Mobile park on Monday thanks to some nice pitching and dormant offenses. The first of those offenses that we’ll see is the Astros, who have scored just two first-inning runs all season (nine games). That’s good enough for 27th in the majors, which is actually better than their run scoring across all nine innings. They are averaging just 3.0 runs per game, which makes them only better than the 1-8 Braves. Add in how good Logan Gilbert has looked in the early season and this should be an easy top of the first inning.

In the bottom of the first, we’ll get our second look at Hayden Wesneski this year. While he wasn’t outstanding in his first outing, he did rack up some strikeouts, which could help him out of an early jam on Monday. Also, the squad he’s facing is sure to help him as well. The Mariners are even worse than the Astros as scoring first inning runs with 0.20 per game (good for 28th in MLB). They’re also only averaging 3.2 runs per game, which makes them only better than the Astros and Braves.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 7: No (-130)

San Diego Padres vs. Athletics

First Pitch – 10:05 pm EST
Sutter Health Park – Sacramento, CA
Broadcast – MLB TV

We’ll look for another NRFI in the west coast nightcap. Luis Severino gets the ball to face the Padres on Monday. He has 12 strikeouts over 12.0 innings this year. While the Cubs got to him last time out, he was sharp in his first start and eventually settled into his second. The Padres are just a touch above league average in run scoring in the first innings and across the game. As a result, this is much more about our faith in Severino than anything else.

The home half of the first has even more reason to like the pitching matchup. Michael King got roughed up a bit in his first outing, but then returned to his form last time out. He struck out 11 Guardians over just 5.0 innings pitched. He held them scoreless in that outing and allowed just three baserunners. If he keeps that kind of form, regardless of the opponent, I like the NRFI. The fact that it is this average to below average looking nine from the Athletics only makes it easier to play.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 7: No (-135)
