MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – April 5

Tampa Bay Rays vs. Texas Rangers

First Pitch – 7:05 pm EST
Globe Life Field – Arlington, TX
Broadcast – MLB TV

We’ll kick off the top of the first with pitching legend Jacob deGrom taking the bump against the Rays. Despite all he’s been through, deGrom looked like his younger self in there during the season opener. He held the Red Sox to just four total baserunners (two walks and two hits) over five innings. He added six strikeouts while maintaining the shutout. This Rays team isn’t hitting as well as the Red Sox and even seem to be cooling down as of late. I expect deGrom to cruise through the first inning in this one.

It’s not the same big name value in the bottom of the inning, but Taj Bradley looked pretty solid his first time out as well. He threw six innings – striking out seven in the process. He did surrender two runs, but the first didn’t come until the fifth inning, which is plenty late for our purposes. He’ll also have the added advantage of facing the Rangers, who have had a rough start to the year in terms of hitting. They’re averaging just 2.9 runs per game on the year, which puts them in 28th in the league.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 5: No (-135)

Athletics vs. Colorado Rockies

First Pitch – 8:10 pm EST
Coors Field – Denver, Colorado
Broadcast – MLB TV

Speaking of pitchers with a hot start, the first half of the inning here will see German Marquez take the hill. He went six scoreless against the Phillies last time out, holding them to four hits and not allowing a single walk. I know I’m not splitting the atom when I say this Athletics offense is not nearly the same caliber of lineup. They’re holding their own, but are still well below average when it comes to putting runs up on the board. That should be plenty to convince us that Marquez can get us a quick three outs.

JP Sears will get the chance to close the door on our NRFI. He’s yet another pitcher who was dealing in his debut – going 6.2 innings and striking out seven. A Julio Rodriguez two-run dinger in the sixth inning was all the damage that he delt with. Luckily for him, there is no Julio Rodriguez in this Athletics lineup. In fact, two runs would be a win for them as that’s their average over the course of this year. Sears should keep them in check early and help this cash.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 5: No (-105)
