MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – April 3

Houston Astros vs. Minnesota Twins

First Pitch – 4:10 pm EST
Target Field – Minneapolis, MN
Broadcast – MLB TV

To kick off the first, we’ll see Joe Ryan on the bump looking to keep the Astros at bay. Ryan looked good in his first start this year, allowing just one run over 5.0 innings and striking out five. That’s a good look to get an NRFI started, but it’ll also help that these Astros have looked rough at the plate so far. They have yet to score a first inning run this year. Additionally, they are tied with the winless Braves for the least runs per game at this stage of the season with 2.0. Ryan should be able to keep that trend rolling.

In the bottom of the first, we’ll see a bit more of a power pitcher in Hunter Brown. He whiffed seven batters over the six innings he threw in his first outing. The Twins aren’t quite the anemic offense that Houston is, but they haven’t exactly set the world on fire either. They’re sitting middle of the pack. As a result, I’ll take the above average pitcher to get us through three out in the late afternoon game.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 3: No (-135)

Cincinnati Reds vs. Milwaukee Brewers

First Pitch – 7:40 pm EST
American Family Field – Milwaukee, WI
Broadcast – MLB TV

Going with Nestor Cortes in an NRFI situation seems like a joke given his first outing. He was the starting pitcher in the absolute beat down the Yankees put on the Brewers early in the season. However, there is two pieces of good news for him in this start. Firstly, he doesn’t have to face a team full of people who know him by his first name. Secondly, it doesn’t look like all of the Reds have moved on to the torpedo bats yet. All jokes aside, as long as he keeps Elly De La Cruz in the park in the first inning, I think he’s good enough to navigate this offense.

In the bottom of the inning, Nick Lodolo will get his chance to round out our NRFI. He’s looked sharp in his first outing. While mostly pitching to contact, he worked through 6.0 innings and only allowed two earned runs. This Brewers offense currently ranks 16th in runs scored per game, which doesn’t worry me here. I’ll take the lefty to get through three outs on Thursday.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 3: No (-135)
