MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – March 28

Boston Red Sox vs. Texas Rangers

First Pitch – 8:05 pm EST
Globe Life Field – Arlington, TX
Broadcast – MLB TV

It’s a small sample size, but the Red Sox did not look great at the top of the order on Thursday. Their top four hitters combined to go 1-for-16 on the day with seven strikeouts. They’ve been a slightly above average team over the last couple years in the first inning, but I think this iteration looks a bit cold out of the gates. Jack Leiter gets the ball to try to keep it that way. He may not have posted amazing numbers last year, but he did manage to keep the first inning clean in each of his last three innings. I like his chances to keep that streak going here as well.

Speaking of cold bats, how about this entire Rangers’ team? They fell apart last year and took a World Series champion and turned them into non-contenders in just a single season. They continued that trend by managing just two runs on seven hits on Opening Day. What’s worse for them is that only two of those hits came from the first five guys in the lineup – going a combined 2-for-18 overall. They’ll get a Tanner Houck who broke out last year and should be able to close out this NRFI for us.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for March 28: No (+100)

Athletics vs. Seattle Mariners

First Pitch – 9:40 pm EST
T-Mobile Park – Seattle, WA
Broadcast – MLB TV

The Ahtletics do seem like they tried to make some improvements in the offseason. Does it seem to have mattered? No it does not. Their team still does not project to score many runs and I can’t imagine that Luis Castillo is going to be the guy to let them get going. In Castillo’s career against the Athletics, he holds a 3.23 ERA and is striking out 6.6 batters per game. There’s no part of that that makes me feel like someone is scoring early in this one.

Speaking of a pitcher who is hot against a particular team – Jeffery Springs takes the bump in this one. He’s actually held the Mariners to an even smaller ERA over his career against them – 2.89 to be specific. Additionally, we’re looking at a Seattle team who looked pretty bad at bat last season. They finished 20th overall in runs per game with just 4.17 per game. Plus, with T-Mobile park being the most pitcher friendly park in the majors, we should be able to get out of that first unscathed.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for March 28: No (-140)
