MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – March 27
Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Miami Marlins
First Pitch – 4:10 pm EST
loanDepot park – Miami, FL
Broadcast – MLB TV
Okay, so maybe this is the most obvious game for a NRFI on Opening Day, but we want to start with a winner. The Pirates were one of the very worst teams at scoring in the first inning during the 2024 season. They averaged just 0.38 first inning runs per game, which put them in 29th in MLB. And in typical Bob Nutting fashion, they made basically no upgrades to the lineup over the offseason. Now they’ll open against Sandy Alcantara – granted he is coming off an injury. However, I still think that means the Pirates get blanked out of the gate.
The bottom half of the inning should be even less of a sweat. While the Marlins were not nearly at futile when it came to scoring in the first inning last year, it won’t matter with Paul Skenes toeing the rubber. It’s hard to imagine that a lineup that is as bad as the Marlins look to be would score off the odds-on favorite for the NL Cy Young this year. With that being said, he should complete the NRFI here.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for March 27: No (-185)
Cleveland Guardians vs. Kansas City Royals
First Pitch – 4:10 pm EST
Kauffman Stadium – Kansas City, MO
Broadcast – MLB TV
Another game where I like the NRFI is in Kansas City tomorrow afternoon. The Royals were a bottom third team when it came to scoring in the first inning last year. They did add Jonathan India to the top of the order, but I’m not sure that does much for me here. He hit below .250 last season and had an OPS+ of just 105. India also doesn’t have a single hit in five plate appearances against Thursday’s starter Tanner Bibee. As a result, I think the NRFI gets off on the right foot here.
In the bottom of the first, we can again rely on the hot arm. Cole Ragans gets the ball for the Royals and he was so good early on last season. He, like Skenes, is one of the top picks for Cy Young in his respective league. With the Guardians being not much more than an average team in the first inning – or beyond even really – you have to like his chances to close the door on our second NRFI.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for March 27: No (-150)
