College Basketball Picks March 22

Gonzaga +4.5 vs. Houston

Two days ago, I told you how under-seeded Gonzaga was. The Bulldogs are closer to the ninth-best team in the nation than a nine-seed in the NCAA Tournament. This is unfortunate for the Cougars, who get an awful draw in the Midwest Region and are truly on upset alert in this spot, but as the spread suggests, I wouldn’t be a significant upset.

This game is a contrast of styles. The Cougars play at one of the slowest paces in the country and rely on defense, while the Zags play on the faster side and rely on their offense. Houston is battle-tested in the Big 12 but hasn’t fared well against elite offenses this season. Although it was early on in the season, Houston fell to both Auburn and Alabama, which are offenses comparable to Gonzaga.

Houston always seems to bow out of this tournament before they should under Kelvin Sampson.  Zags +4.5 here, and maybe sprinkle ML.

Wisconsin -1.5 vs. BYU

Wisconsin easily defeated Montana in the Round of 64, while BYU took down a solid VCU squad. Both of these teams have elite offenses and shouldn’t have problems scoring. My worry for BYU is on the defensive end. Wisconsin has shown an ability to clamp up at the end of games, especially in Big 10 play, while BYU relies strictly on their offense.

I think his one will be close to the finish, but I’m rolling with John Tonje and the Badgers
