The Fiesta Bowl this year gets the #3 ranked Boise State Broncos facing #6 Penn State Nittany Lions, with the winner moving on to the Rose Bowl to face the winner of Georgia vs Notre Dame. And, despite their superior ranking, the Broncos are a massive underdog heading into New Year’s Eve.
Penn State demolished SMU in the College Football Playoffs First Round (while Boise State enjoyed a bye), which is surely affecting this betting line. Advanced stats also point to the Nittany Lions being the better team in this matchup. However, when you dive into the numbers they should only be about a 7.5-point favorite against Boise State at a neutral site, not the double-digit spread we’re getting.
