Lock Selection: Minnesota Vikings
Despite their rookie quarterback going down before the start of the season, Kevin O’Connell has his team at 11-2 and in prime position to make the playoffs. Sam Darnold and Brian Flores also deserve a lot of credit for Minnesota’s success in 2024. The often maligned, former third-overall selection in the 2018 NFL Draft has revitalized his career in O’Connell’s offense. Flores, on the other side of the ball, has transformed a weaker defensive unit into one of the best in the league through exotic blitz packages and an excellent pass rush.
On Monday Night Football, the Vikings will host the Bears in a divisional matchup. I could discuss the Bears’ coaching malpractice this season, but to be honest, that would be a waste of time. After firing offensive coordinator Shane Waldron and giving his play-calling duties to Thomas Brown, Chicago seemed to be on the right path. That was until they fired Matt Euberflus and named Thomas Brown interim head coach.
That is not to say Euberflus didn’t deserve to be fired because, of course he did, but putting more on the plate of a guy who was a mere offensive assistant at the beginning of the season backfired last week. Granted, Chicago played the 49ers, but quite frankly, it was one of their flatter performances of the season.
I don’t think the interim head coach bump comes into play here. Especially at home, Minnesota should take care of business quite easily.
Bonus Selection: Green Bay Packers
Let’s roll with another promising NFC North squad. Green Bay was selected by many to reach the Super Bowl after their playoff performances last season. This season got off to a rough start with Jordan Love sidelined by an early injury, but Malik Willis stepped up impressively to fill the void. Josh Jacobs has also been a revelation in both the running and passing games. He seems ecstatic not to be a Las Vegas Raider.
In this one, Green Bay travels to the Pacific Northwest to take on the Seattle Seahawks. While Seattle has put together a nice winning streak, overall, I am not a long-term believer in this team. Geno Smith has been solid, but their defense and offensive line are major question marks going forward.
Green Bay is a fundamentally sound football team, which is another aspect that Seatle lacks. In this one, I’m rolling with the better overall team from top to bottom, even if they are on the road.
