NBA First Scorer Props – December 3
Orlando Magic vs. New York Knicks
Tipoff – 7:30 pm EST
Madison Square Garden – New York, NY
Broadcast – TNT
The Knicks are one of the top ten teams when it comes to scoring first in the NBA. That’s impressive given that they are just league average when it comes to winning the tip. Regardless of their struggles there, they should easily win the tip over the Magic and Goga Bitadze, who are amongst the worst five in the NBA in terms of winning the tip. They are also in the bottom five in terms of scoring first. As a result, we’ll head to New York for a pick for this one.
Mikal Bridges is the man showing up in the first bucket data the most. In 11 successes on the year for the Knicks, he has four of them. While that is enticing, he isn’t the one seeing those early shots. That honor goes to Karl-Anthony Towns. He’s taken the first shot in back-to-back games. Additionally, he fits the profile of who is scoring against the Magic first. Their last three conceded first scores all belong to big men who can still shoot from the outside. Towns should be able to get one of those looks early and capitalize.
First Scorer Bet for December 3: Karl-Anthony Towns (+700)
Golden State Warriors vs. Denver Nuggets
Tipoff – 10:00 pm EST
Ball Arena – Denver, CO
Broadcast – TNT
On of the best spots for Tuesday is the game in the mile high city. Although Denver hasn’t been great on the tip, they have converted at an absurd rate. With just a 38.9% tip rate is certainly nothing to write home about. However, they’re scoring first 61.1% of the time. That shows that their defense holds up particularly well and also shows that they make the best of the chances that they do get.
It should be even easier for the Nuggets to score first with the Warriors being as bad as they are in all the major indicators. They are even worse on the tip – winning just 21.1% of the tips on the year. They also are only scoring first 42.1% of the time. While that is an improvement on their tip percentage, it’s 19.0% the numbers that the Nuggets are putting up.
If we look at the first three shots taken by the Nuggets in the last three games, only two people appear in all three games. The first is Payton Watson, who will likely be relegated to the bench for Tuesday’s action. The other is Michael Porter Jr. When you add in that no player on this squad is taking more three-point attempts, I like an early three-ball from him.
First Scorer Bet for December 3: Michael Porter Jr. (+950)
