NBA First Scorer Props – November 30
Atlanta Hawks vs. Charlotte Hornets
Tipoff – 6:00 pm EST
Spectrum Center – Charlotte, NC
Broadcast – NBA TV
The Hawks should have a clear advantage when it comes to getting the first score. The Hornets have been using a combination of Moussa Diabate and Taj Gibson on the tops as of late – a tandem that has combined to win just 40.0% of the tips. Clint Capela should be getting the look on the visitor side, and he’s getting 65.0% of his tips. Not only are they better on the tip, but they’re more efficient at putting the shot in. They are one of two teams in the league getting the first rate at 70.0% or better (the Rockets being the other). With the Hornets below the league average in that metric, we’ll grab someone from Atlanta.
The Hawks are coming off of back-to-back games against the Cavaliers. In those two games, Zaccharie Risacher took a ton of the early shots despite coming away mostly empty handed. He took one of the first three in the most recent game, but took two of the first three in the game before that. A good portion of the first buckets that the Hornets have given up have been to sharp shooters on the outside. If that’s the case here, the odds should be in our favor.

Golden State Warriors vs. Phoenix Suns

This is another game where we see big discrepancies in the early data that we can take advantage of. The Suns are grabbing the opening tip 77.8% of the time – largely due to the good work of Jusuf Nurkic. While he’ll be questionable for the game on Saturday, Mason Plumlee has been servicable over the years in the spot. Additionally, it shouldn’t matter against the Warriors, who have won just 16.7% of their tips. The Suns will also sport a 16.7% lead in terms of first scores, which means you’d be crazy to play someone on the Warriors here.
Kevin Durant has been getting the fist shot quite a bit lately, but there is another common name I like better. Devin Booker has been letting them fly more frequently and doing a better job of drawing contact as well. He also took one of their first three shots in two of the last three games. I like Booker even better when we consider the types of players scoring first against the Warriors. It’s been a shooting guard or a stretch-three in each of the last three games.
