Can we really call the Tennessee Volunteers vs the Vanderbilt Commodores a ‘rivalry’, considering how lopsided the results have been? Tennessee is 78-32-5 in this matchup and has won their game against the Commodores for five straight years. And the #8 ranked Volunteers are heavily favored to beat the Commodores again tomorrow.
However, in my and the SGPN team’s eyes, Tennessee is too heavily favored. Based on advanced stats, Tennesse is ranked 18th in the nation and Vanderbilt 40th—a disparency, but not that huge of one, worth less than five points on the spread. Vandy has also played a much more difficult schedule and even knocked off #1-ranked Alabama earlier this season.
Based on the advanced stats and taking into account Vanderbilt’s home-field advantage, I have this game handicapped as Tennessee -2.5 So there’s definitely value on the Vanderbilt side of the spread, despite them losing their last two games and three of their last four.
