NBA First Scorer Props – November 24
Washington Wizards vs. Indiana Pacers
Tipoff – 5:00 pm EST
Gainbridge Fieldhouse – Indianapolis, IN
Broadcast – NBA TV
The Pacers hold plenty of early game advantages in this one. They’re currently ranking in the top ten in first bucket success rate. That gives them a sizeable lead over the Wizards who are down in 22nd place. Not only are they getting more success, but the odds of them having the first possession here is quite high. Myles Turner will take the jump for Indiana and he has a 71.4% win rate on the tip. Alex Sarr will take it on the other side and he’s grabbing it at just 42.9%. With the success rates where they are and the tip winner grabbing 66.1% of the first scores this year, we have to side with Indiana.
If you’re heading to Indiana and looking for a first bucket, there is a no-brainer as to who you want to play. Bennedict Mathurin has been the leader for this Pacers squad all year. He has a third of their first buckets this year. Not only that, he’s getting a ton of early looks. In two of their last three games, he not only took the first shot, but he took the first and the second shot. Despite all those factors, the fact that he’s fourth on the Pacers in shot attempts keeps his odds in a great place.
First Scorer Bet for November 24: Bennedict Mathurin (+750)
Dallas Mavericks vs. Miami Heat
Tipoff – 6:00 pm EST
Kaseya Center – Miami, FL
Broadcast – NBA TV
If you just look at some of the surface stats around tips, you might mistakenly favor the Heat. They have a tip-win lead by 16.7% over the Mavericks. However, what this doesn’t take into account is the fact that the Mavericks used Daniel Gafford early in the season who is dreadful on the tip. Dereck Lively Jr. is within two percentatge points of tip wins of Bam Adebayo. With that in mind, we can turn out attention to their first bucket successes.
Despite having Gafford in there for a while, the Mavericks are wildly outpacing the Heat in scoring first. They have a 50.0% win rate, putting them right in the middle of the pack. The Heat, meanwhile, have a 30.8% win rate, which puts them in 28th place. Given the uptick in the Mavericks’ tip wins lately, that gap should only be widening.
While PJ Washington has seen a lot of the early action – and a couple of first buckets – there’s another member of the Mavericks I’m on here. Klay Thompson has been getting plenty of looks as well. With Luka Doncic out, they’ll need him to step up with the shooting. Additionally, the Heat have given up their last two first buckets to outside shooters.
First Scorer Bet for November 24: Klay Thompson (+650)
