NBA First Scorer Props – November 3
Detroit Pistons vs. Brooklyn Nets
Tipoff – 3:30 pm EST
Barclays Center – Brooklyn, NY
Broadcast – NBA TV
Jalen Duren hasn’t been great on the tip for the Pistons, but he has won some jump balls. That’s more than we can say for anyone for the Nets. They’re still the lone team in the league with no tip wins. They’ve lost every chance at a first possession in each of their six game. On the season, as well as historically, tip winners take just under two-thirds of the first buckets. So with that knowledge and the fact that the Pistons have scored four of the six first buckets – you have to go with someone from Detroit here.
He may be averaging the fewest shots per game in the Pistons starting lineup, but I’m going with Tim Hardaway Jr. Not only is he shooting at a really high percentage on the year, but he also is getting tons of early looks. In fact, in each of the last three games, he’s taken the first shot of the game for Detroit. Additionally, he took the second one as well last game. Despite all of these factors, he still has the longest odds on the squad and we’re going to take advantage of those.
First Scorer Bet for November 3: Tim Hardaway Jr. (+1100)
Orlando Magic vs. Dallas Mavericks
Tipoff – 7:30 pm EST
American Airlines Center – Dallas, TX
Broadcast – NBA TV
While the Nets are the lone team without a tip win, the Mavericks have a problem that looks worse than that. They remain one of the only two teams in the league that have yet to score a first bucket. Some of that issue is the fact that Daniel Gafford has just won one tip all year. However, the Magic haven’t won many more tips and are scoring at a way higher average. They’re just 2-of-6 on the tip for the year, but have gotten half of the first buckets. With success at that rate, I like them to score first here again.
With Paolo Banchero injured, the Magic offense has been pretty obvious early in the game. They’re putting the ball in Franz Wagner’s hands and letting him go to work. In their last game, he took four of Orlando’s first five shots – with his brother taking the only other one. I’m not sure it’ll continue at quite as drastic of a pace, but you have to like the way that volume looks. It also is a nice boon to my confidence when you see that he had nine first buckets last year as well.
