NBA First Scorer Props – October 28
Detroit Pistons vs. Miami Heat
Tipoff – 7:30 pm EST
Kaseya Center – Miami, FL
Broadcast – NBA TV
Taking a member of the Heat here seems like a slam dunk. Bam Adebayo was one of the very best guys at securing his team the first possession last year. He won 66.2% of all of his tips and had his team above league average in terms of scoring the first bucket. On the other side, Jalen Duren was below average – getting just 47.5% of their tips. On top of that, he’s only managed to grab one of the three that he’s taken on this short season. With that difference and the ability to finish the Heat have, Miami is clearly the play.
When looking to a player to score the first bucket for the Heat, I’m looking at the only person to get one of their first shots in both of their first two games. If you look at their shot log, only one person has a short in the first three attempts during both games – and that man is Terrry Rozier. Rozier fired from deep in the last game and missed a layup early in the other. He’s been shooting better as of late and has been getting to the line a lot as well. As a result, I trust him to pick us up a bucket here.
First Scorer Bet for October 28: Terry Rozier (+850)
Utah Jazz vs. Dallas Mavericks
Tipoff – 8:30 pm EST
American Airlines Center – Dallas, TX
Broadcast – NBA TV
It doesn’t appear that the Jazz are poised to do a lot of winning this year, but they do seem to be set up to win some tips. Walker Kessler appears to be drawing the fulltime tip duty and is 2-for-2 on the year. That’s a solid continuation of what he was already doing last year – posting a 63.6% success rate in a small sample. It should be even easier as he squares off with the Mavericks’ Daniel Gafford. He hasn’t won a tip all year and won just 38.6% last year. With tip winners getting 65.6% of the first buckets, we’ll grab a member of the Jazz here.
The Jazz have leaned on Collin Sexton for a lot of their early shots. Keyonte George also has seen some early looks. However, if they want to get their first win of the season, I expect they’ll need to lean on their 200 million dollar man. Lauri Markkanen has been active, but he failed to get going last game. With only 13 points, they simply need more production from the Finn. They know this as well, which is why I expect them to put the ball in his hands right away.
First Scorer Bet for October 28: Lauri Markkanen (+600)
