MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – October 12
Detroit Tigers vs. Cleveland Guardians
First Pitch – 1:08 pm EST
Progressive Field – Cleveland, Ohio
Broadcast – TBS
In the first four games of this series, the NRFI has only hit one time. However, with the amount of offense we’ve seen so far, that sort of feels like a fluke that is destined to regress to the mean. There’s been only 22 total runs scored between the teams so far – that comes out to 2.75 runs per team per game.
The first pitcher looking to keep that trend going will be Matthew Boyd. Despite a small sample size, Boyd was solid this year. He carried a 2.72 ERA into the postseason and kept that going into this series. In his first game against these Tigers, he held them scoreless over 4.2 innings. He posted a scoreless first with no real threats other than a seven-pitch walk.
The bottom of the first should be even easier. Cleveland’s bats have been even cooler lately with just five runs over the last three games. Now they have to face the presumed AL Cy Young winner in Tarik Skubal. Skubal hasn’t allowed a run in his last 24 innings pitched. He threw 7.0 scoreless innings on Monday while only allowing three Guardians to reach. I can’t imagine that these trends turn in the opposite direction on Saturday afternoon.
