MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – October 9
Philadelphia Phillies vs. New York Mets

Citi Field – Queens, New York

This series gave us an NRFI on Tuesday, and I expect another on Thursday. The first reason is just how good Jose Quintana has been. He threw 6.0 scoreless innings against the Brewers in the wild card series. While that might be a surprise for some people, it wasn’t for anyone who payed attention to his September. Over four starts (25.0 innings) in the month, he maintained a 0.72 ERA and picked up three wins. If you add his October start, that gives him a 0.58 ERA in his last five starts. As good as the Phillies are hitting, he just seems like a sure thing here.
While we’ve seen plenty of Jose Quintana lately, this will be the first October appearance for Ranger Suarez. He’s been roughed up a bit lately, but I think this is a good spot to get right. For one, he’s been good against the Mets historically. In three starts against the Mets this year, he has a 2.30 ERA. He also picked up an NRFI against them just three weeks ago. hIS finicky nature recently helps this number out a bit, and I still think we get the first three outs.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for October 9: No (TBD)
New York Yankees vs. Kansas City Royals
First Pitch – 7:08 pm EST
Kauffman Stadium – Kansas City, Missouri
Broadcast – TBS
Another pitcher who has been lights out since the calendar turned to August is Seth Lugo. He gets the ball on Wednesday and has been sharp in his last six starts. With a 2.25 ERA in that span and exactly 9.0 strikeouts per nine innings, I like the form he’s in. On top of that, it’s not like the Yankees bats have been hot. The best hitting team in baseball has only 20 runs in their last five games (4.0 runs per game). When we add in that Seth Lugo went 7.0 scoreless against them with ten strikeouts in their last meeting, it makes it even easier to get behind.
While the name Clarke Schmidt might not be one you expected to be a big piece of October, he’s put up deserving numbers this year. He carries a 2.85 ERA through the season this year. A lot of that was carried by solid early numbers before he got some unplanned time off. He also has a pair of NRFIs in a row and this is a huge game for the Yankees. As a result, I trust him to go get us three outs here.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for October 9: No (TBD)
