MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – September 25

Milwaukee Brewers vs. Pittsburgh Pirates

First Pitch – 6:40 pm EST
PNC Park – Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Broadcast – MLB TV

The Brewers are hitting the ball well lately, but have really not been as good early on in games all year. While they’re a top five team in runs scored, they are in the bottom half of the league in runs scored in the first inning. I like Luis Ortiz’s chance to keep them in check. He’s allowed just nine runs over his last five starts (27.2 innings). That comes out to a 2.15 ERA over that span. Although he might not be able to keep that up for the entire game with this offense, I think he still gets us three outs.

The Pirates have been much worse offensively – scoring just 11 runs in their last five games. That tracks with how they’ve been hitting this year as they currently rank 23rd in runs scored. They too have been worse in the first inning, where they actually rank 27th. Freddy Peralta and his 3.69 ERA shouldn’t have issues with them – especially with how he’s been lately. Over his last two starts (10.0 innings), he’s allowed just two runs.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 25: No (-130)

Kansas City Royals vs. Washington Nationals

First Pitch – 6:45 pm EST
Nationals Park – Washington, DC
Broadcast – MLB TV

The Royals are just hanging on for a playoff spot, but you wouldn’t know that based on how their offense looks. Their bats have been almost not existent in the last week. They have scored just one run in their last three games and that wasn’t even in regulation. Additionally, if we want to take it back more, they have just four runs in their last five games. DJ Herz has the ball for Washington on Wednesday. Although he got shelled in his last outing, he has allowed one or less runs in three of his last five starts.

It may sound crazy, but the Nationals have been just as bad at the plate lately. They also have just one run in their last three games. That’s a more consistent woe for them though, as they currently rank 29th in first inning runs and 25th in runs overall. Michael Lorenzen should keep that trend going. He’s coming back from injury, but only allowed one run in his three starts prior. Even if he isn’t at his best, this is a team he should shut down.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 25: No (-135)
