MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – September 23

Boston Red Sox vs. Toronto Blue Jays

First Pitch – 7:07 pm EST
Rogers Centre – Toronto, Ontario
Broadcast – MLB TV

The Red Sox bats were hot over the weekend, but that doesn’t stop my love for this NRFI. Despite their recent success, they’re running into a quality pitcher here in Chris Bassitt. Bassitt has allowed just one earned run in three of his last four starts – which includes one such outing against these same Red Sox. That’s really not news as he’s always chewed up Boston when he pitches against them. In six career outings (40.2 innings), he’s allowed just ten earned runs. That comes out to a 2.21 ERA against them lifetime.

On the other side of things, the Blue Jays have not been as hot. They’ve scored just nine runs in their last five games (1.8 runs per game). It won’t help that they’re facing Tanner Houck. The Boston righty has allowed just five runs in his last three starts combined. That’s helped to bring his season-long ERA down to just 3.21. That’s plenty low enough for him to keep that trend going for the Jays.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 23: No (-130)

Seattle Mariners vs. Houston Astros

First Pitch – 8:10 pm EST
Minute Maid Park – Houston, Texas
Broadcast – MLB TV

While the White Sox are definitely the worst hitting team in the league, the numbers for the Mariners aren’t all that much better. They rank just in front of Chicago in terms of team batting average – putting them 29th in the majors. They also rank dead last when it comes to strikeouts as the only team above ten strikeouts per game. Hunter Brown should feast off of those trends. He’s allowed just eight earned runs in his last five starts – with four of those five starts being quality starts.

While the Mariners offense has been bad, the arms have been solid – making them one of my favorite NRFI teams. Bryce Miller is one of those stellar arms, with an ERA hovering just above 3.00. He’s allowed just two runs in his last three starts (18.0 innings). That comes out to a 1.00 ERA in that span. As good as the bats have been lately for the Astros, I still think he should round this one out for us.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 23: No (-130)
