MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – September 22
Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Cincinnati Reds
First Pitch – 1:10 pm EST
Great American Ball Park – Cincinnati, Ohio
Broadcast – MLB TV
We rode this series to an NRFI win on Saturday, and I like it even more for Sunday. The Pirates are still struggling at the plate as of late. With a one run showing on Saturday, they’ve scored just 13 runs over their last six games (2.16 runs per game). While Rhett Lowder is a fine pitcher to get the shut down, they’ll have an even bigger ask on Sunday with Hunter Greene. The All-Star returns from the IL just in time for the close of the season and this NRFI. While the injury is a concern, he was lights out before he left. Combined with the issues of the Pirates offense, we should start this one in good shape.
The Reds are a middle of the pack hitting team who tagged Jared Jones up for three in the third and three in the fourth. Early in the game he didn’t see much trouble, and I expect even less in this one. Paul Skenes takes the hill with likely one of his last couple of starts for 2024. He’s allowed just two earned runs in his lat three starts (17.0 innings), so I’m not worried about him getting his spot blown up here.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 22: No (TBD)
Philadelphia Phillies vs. New York Mets
First Pitch – 7:00 pm EST
Citi Field – Queens, New York
Broadcast – ESPN
This may be an unconventional play for a couple reasons. The bats for both of these teams have been hot in the series and an NRFI hasn’t cashed in any of the first three games. However, I am leaning on the arms here, who I think have a good chance of bringing this one home for us.
The Mets send Tylor Megill to the bump, and he’s been surprisingly effective. In three September starts, he has allowed just three earned runs, which comes out to a 1.69 ERA for the month. He’s also only allowed eight hits in the month and has managed to keep every one of his opponents in the park. All of that is a good sign for this Sunday.
The Phillies will send hot Cy Young candidate Zack Wheeler. He’s pitching some of his best ball as he heads to the playoffs. He has just a 1.89 September ERA and has taken the win in every games he’s pitched this month. He’s also struck out 22 batters in just 19.0 innings, which should be good enough to blank the Mets early.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 22: No (TBD)
