MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – September 21
Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Cincinnati Reds
First Pitch – 1:10 pm EST
Great American Ball Park – Cincinnati, Ohio
Broadcast – MLB TV
The Pirates have been icy cold at the plate lately. They’ve scored just 12 runs over their last five games (2.4 runs per game). While their run scoring has been bad across the board, it’s been even worse in the first inning. The recent run has dropped them to 29th in the major, only ahead of the White Sox.
Things won’t get easier for Pittsburgh as they face rookie phenom Rhett Lowder. Through four starts, he carries a 1.74 ERA and has 17 strikeouts. In addition to the good surface numbers, he’s also getting back to what made him so good in college and the minors – limiting walks. While he allowed eight in his first two starts, he’s only issued one in the last two.
The Reds have been hitting a bit better than the Pirates, but still are a middle of the pack team in terms of offense. As a result, the NRFI we’re looking at here is more contingent upon what we have on the bump. Fellow rookie Jared Jones will be the starter. He’s allowed three or less runs in each of his last three starts and has his ERA back down to 3.85. That should be enough for us to close this one out.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 21: No (-115)
Detroit Tigers vs. Baltimore Orioles
First Pitch – 4:05 pm EST
Camdan Yards – Baltimore, Maryland
Broadcast – MLB TV
The Tigers are a below average team at the plate, and they’re going to be facing a pitcher on a nice uptick. While the yearly statline looks ugly for Cade Povich, his last three starts have looked much different. In his last three starts (17.0 innings), he’s allowed just six runs – which comes out to a 3.18 ERA in that span. Additionally, his strikeout numbers have also looked better. In those 17.0 innings, he has 23 strikeouts, which is another confidence booster for this NRFI.
Although it’s always a bit scary to look for an NRFI against this Orioles line up, they’ve been relatively quiet lately. They’ve scored just 17 runs in their last five games (3.4 runs per game), which is down from their season-long average. Reese Olson looks to keep that trend going and he’s been good enough to trust this year. He carries a 3.50 ERA into Saturday’s action and I like his chances to limit the damage early here.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 21: No (-125)
