MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – September 14

Cincinnati Reds vs. Minnesota Twins

First Pitch – 7:10 pm EST
Target Field – Minneapolis, Minnesota
Broadcast – MLB TV

The Reds bats broke out of a slump a bit on Friday – scoring eight runs against this Twins squad. However, they had been on an ugly skid prior to that. Cincinnati had put up just six runs in the previous four games prior. Now we’ll hope they return to that form when they face Simeon Woods Richardson. He’s had an up and down season so far, but has largely kept bats in check lately. He’s only allowed more than three earned runs in a start once since the beginning of August. Between that and the slump, I like he can get us three outs early here.

In the bottom of the inning, we’re relying far more on the pitcher than we are a slumping team. Nick Martinez toes the rubber on Saturday. He’s held opponents to just one run in his last two games (12.1 innings). Those games come against the Braves and the Astros, which are nothing to turn our nose up at. Also, he really limited baserunners in those games, with just eight total hits between the two. He should be able to parlay that into us getting this NRFI.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 14: No (-130)

Milwaukee Brewers vs. Arizona Diamondbacks

First Pitch – 8:10 pm EST
Chase Field – Phoenix, Arizona
Broadcast – ESPN+

The sketchy part of this NRFI will definitely be the top of the first. Brandon Pfaadt has been shakey lately to say the least. He’s had over a 6.00 ERA in his last five starts, giving up runs hand over fist. However, what he hasn’t done in that stretch is allow a run in the first inning. He has five straight NRFIs, which includes games against solid hitting teams like the Dodgers, Astros and Mets. He’ll also get to face a Brewers team on a bit of an offensive skid. They’ve scored just 11 runs in their last five games (2.2 runs per game).

In the bottom of the first, rookie sensation Tobias Myers tries to bring it home for us. Because he’s not even the best rookie on his team, just how good he is tends to get overlooked. He’s allowed just three earned runs in two September starts, giving him a 2.31 ERA in the month. If he maintains that, it would be his fourth straight month with a sub-3.00 ERA, which also includes a month where he stayed under 2.00.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 14: No (-115)
