MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – September 7

Washington Nationals vs. Pittsburgh Pirates

First Pitch – 1:35 pm EST
PNC Park – Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Broadcast – MLB TV

In the top of the first, the Nationals will face off with Luis Ortiz. The Pirates righty has looked phenomenal since moving into the rotation from the bullpen. He’s lowered his ERA all the way down to 3.19 and is carrying a WHIP just over 1.00. He’s been even better in his last two starts. In both of those two starts he’s allowed no runs while throwing 6.0 innings. He’s also logged five strikeouts in each of those contests. With the run he’s on and the fact the Nationals rank 28th in first inning runs, there’s no reason to think they’ll get on the board early here.

The Pirates hitting hasn’t been much to write home about this year either. They rank 23rd in runs scored and are even worse in the first inning – where they rank 29th. They’ll also have to face a sneaky good pitcher in DJ Herz. While he got hit a little by the Cubs in his last outing, he had been seven consecutive outings prior without allowing more than two earned. Some of those games were against top hitting teams, so this Pirates squad shouldn’t be an issue.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 7: No (-120)

Chicago White Sox vs. Boston Red Sox

First Pitch – 7:15 pm EST
Fenway Park – Boston, Massachusetts
Broadcast – Fox

You have to love a NRFI that starts with the worst hitting team in the majors. The White Sox rank dead last in runs and dead last in first inning runs. They haven’t been on a great trajectory since Grady Sizemore took over either. They’ve scored just twelve runs in their last five games (2.4 runs per game). Even that is inflated due to the fact that they had an eight-spot against Baltimore. Now they’ll face Cooper Criswell, who has allowed just two total runs in his last three starts. He should have an easy first three outs here again.

The Red Sox are a much better hitting team, but I’m ready to put my faith in Garrett Crochet again. While he’s not really going deep into games anymore as they protect his arm, the innings he does throw have been good. He’s had a 2.38 ERA through his last four starts. It’s also worth mentioned that the Red Sox are sputtering as of late as well. They’ve actually scored just 11 runs in their last five games (2.2 runs per game). With both teams hitting like that and a solid pitching matchup, this should be an easy NRFI.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 7: No (-125)
