MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – September 1

Chicago Cubs vs. Washington Nationals

First Pitch – 1:35 pm EST
Nationals Park – Washington, DC
Broadcast – MLB TV

We scored on an NRFI for this matchup yesterday and we’re doubling down today for many of the same reasons.

The first reason was that the Cubs are a very average team when it comes to hitting and the Nationals have an under-the-radar starter on the bump. Mitchell Parker’s numbers may not look stellar on the surface, but a lot of that is due to bad games that the Nationals let him wear. Three games ago his ERA took a big hit when he gave up nine runs to the Phillies and they left him in for far too long. If you look at the other games in his last five, he’s thrown 23.1 innings and allowed just three earned runs. I expect more of that version here, which should get out NRFI started right.

The bottom of the inning is more of the same too – with the primary reason being that the Nationals are awful at the plate. They’re 27th in first inning runs and 29th in home runs in the league. Jordan Wicks returns from an oblique injury Sunday and gets the nod. He was having a decent season prior to spending 60 days on the IL, and this is the perfect team to return against. His 4.14 ERA tells me all I need here to go in on the NRFI.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 1: No (-110)

Atlanta Braves vs. Philadelphia Phillies

First Pitch – 7:00 pm EST
Citizens Bank Park – Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Broadcast – ESPN

The Phillies play the Braves for the seventh time in their last 13 games. All the games in this series have been mostly low scoring. You can blame the playoff-like environment, the rivalry, the good pitching matchups, or the lagging bats. I’ll choose all four and get in on another NRFI here.

The Braves have scored just 25 runs in those seven games (3.57 runs per game). Due to inuries, their bats have been way behind expectations for this year. That shouldn’t change with Aaron Nola on the hill. He’s allowed just two earned runs in his last three starts combined (19.0 innings). Both of them were to this Braves team, but that was after he threw a scoreless first three innings. We’ll expect that again from him on Sunday.

On the other side is rookie standout Spencer Schwellenbach. He didn’t allowed more than three earned runs in a game in all of August leading to a 3.07 monthly ERA. That includes his start against the Phillies as well, where he went 6.2 innings and allowed just two runs. His strikeout stuff has played up as of late with every August start having at least seven.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 1: No (-120)
