MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – June 27

Miami Marlins vs. Philadelphia Phillies

First Pitch – 6:20 pm EST
Citizens Bank Park – Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Broadcast – MLB TV

Yesterday I wrote about how I liked the NRFI in the Marlins/Royals game – which cashed by the way. The main reason that I liked it was that I believed in the arm of Trevor Rogers to limit the solid bats of the Royals. Well, Rogers got pushed back a game for some extra rest and he goes here against another good lineup in Philadelphia. To recap he’s allowed just five earned runs in his last three starts (18.1 innings). Furthermore, he’s kept a 0.93 WHIP in that span and has looked better with the strikeouts in big moments as well.

The other reason that I liked the NRFI in that game was that the Marlins offense has been particularly bad. They’re 29th in runs per game – only ahead of the lowly White Sox. They followed that up with just scoring one run off of the Royals and Brady Singer. Zack Wheeler is not an easier test for them. He has just a 2.73 ERA this year and a 0.96 WHIP. He’s allowed one run or less in four of his last five starts. I can’t imagine that the Marlins are a team that is going to buck that trend.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 27: No (-110)

Detroit Tigers vs. Los Angeles Angels

First Pitch – 9:38 pm EST
Angel Stadium – Anaheim, California
Broadcast – MLB TV

The home half of this inning should be the easier of the two here. The Angels are banged up a bit and rank 24th in the majors in first inning runs. They’re just a touch better in terms of run scoring in general at 22nd in MLB. None of that bodes well for the Angels offense, but what is even worse is facing Jack Flaherty. He has just a 2.93 ERA on the year and has allowed just one earned run in his last four starts (22.1 innings). The Angels aren’t going to touch him at all in this game, so the first inning should be plenty safe.

On the other side, there is a little to sweat. While the Tigers have been bad offensively – bottom third in runs scored and bottom half in first inning runs – they do have the pleasure of facing someone making his 2024 debut. Davis Daniel has not yet thrown this year, but looked great in a short stint last year. He threw 12.1 innings last year and allowed just three earned runs. Between that past success, the infamiliarity, and the rough offense of the Tigers, he should be able to get the first three outs without too many problems.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 27: No (-130)
