Stanley Cup Final Game 5 Picks & Predictions

Do we have ourselves a series?

The Oilers’ offense finally came alive in Game 4 with eight goals against the Panthers, chasing Sergei Bobrovsky in the second period. Those eight goals in Game 4 matched the Oilers’ total in their previous five matchups against the Panthers this season. Florida still holds a 22-16 advantage overall, but both teams have now scored 12 goals in the Stanley Cup Final.

It’s extremely rare to see a sweep in any championship series, especially the Stanley Cup Final. There hasn’t been a sweep since 1998, and the Oilers avoided that. However, it’s quite possible that the Oilers won’t have anything else to celebrate this season.

Edmonton was in full desperation mode, facing a 3-0 deficit in Game 4. The Oilers put it all on the line with their backs against the wall, and it paid off. But there was some luck involved.

Darnell Nurse arguably should’ve received a five-minute major for his kneeing penalty early in the game, even with it just being a two-minute minor.

The Panthers hit the post twice in as many seconds before the Oilers opened the scoring with a shorthanded goal—and that took Brandon Montour taking out his own goalie. If Nurse gets a major, the Panthers score on the power play, or Montour defends the shorthanded rush better, we could be talking about a parade in South Florida rather than a Game 5.

To put it simply, the Panthers are still the much better and much deeper team. They’re also fantastic at home this year with a 34-15-3 record, while the Oilers are barely over .500 on the road at 27-23-2.

This is still the Panthers’ series to lose, and I could see the Panthers turning this into a laugher in Game 5.

Stanley Cup Final Game 5 Pick: Panthers -1.5 (+190)
Stanley Cup Final Game 5 Total: Over 5.5 (-105)
