MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – June 18

Arizona Diamondbacks vs.Washington Nationals

First Pitch – 6:45 pm EST
Nationals Park – PNC Park
Broadcast – MLB TV

We’ve got two sides of this game fighting against our NRFI and I like each to fail for different reasons. The Diamondbacks have first crack at it and their offense has been solid. They’re 6th in the league in runs scored and 3rd in first inning runs. However, they do have to face Jake Irvin who has been stellar this year. He has only allowed three earned runs over his last four starts (24.0 innings). He has a run of five straight quality starts as well. All of that is against some high level compeition – the Guardians, the Braves, and Minnesota.

On the other side, you aren’t going to see a dangerous arm. In fact, Slade Cecconi gave up seven runs in his last start, bumping his ERA up to 6.70. However, I’m just not sure the Nationals bats are the right ones to take advantage of those pitches. Washington is dead last in the league in first inning runs at just 0.25 per game. They’re only a touch better across the game at 23rd in the majors. Even if Cecconi is struggling, he should be able to get them out of the first.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 18: No (-105)

San Francisco Giants vs. Chicago Cubs

First Pitch – 8:05 pm EST
Wrigley Field – Chicago, Illinois
Broadcast – MLB TV

We rode the first game of this series to an NRFI victory Monday at +100, and we’re looking to do so again on Tuesday.

The reasons are largely unchanged. The Giants continue to be one of the very worst teams in the league at scoring first – they rank in the bottom five of the league. Justin Steele will have the bump for the Cubs. While he doesn’t quite have the numbers that Javier Asaad has, he has electric stuff. He’s also striking out nearly one per inning with a 1.00 WHIP and a 3.22 ERA. The Giants should struggle again early – and likely often.

On the other side, the Cubs are a bit better in terms of hitting. They are, however, in the bottom third of the league in terms of scoring runs. Going into Monday’s action they had just eight runs over the last four games. Then they didn’t score for the first five innings of Monday’s game either. Now they’ll look to break that trend against Logan Webb. With his 3.02 ERA that won’t be an easy task.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 18: No (TBD)
